The Canary Islands use Western European Time (WET) at UTC+0 with WEST at UTC+1 during DST, an hour behind mainland Spain. This is the only part of Spanish national territory not on CET. The offset places Tenerife on the same clock as Lisbon, Dublin, and the UK in winter, and aligns the islands more naturally with their geographic position roughly seven degrees west of Madrid. Where is Tenerife?
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic around 300 kilometres west of the Moroccan coast and 1,300 kilometres south-southwest of mainland Spain. The island holds around 950,000 residents, with the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the northern coast and the larger conurbation of San Cristóbal de La Laguna immediately inland. The volcanic peak of Teide, the highest point in Spain at 3,715 metres, rises through the centre of the island.
